Rifle Falls Trip Update

On Saturday, August 22, a group of Museum friends discovered the unique and beautiful Rifle Falls State Park. Coyote Trail took us by grottos of travertine limestone, through tunnels of boxalder, and over Rifle Falls, a beautiful triple falls that once supplied all the power for the city of Rifle. This almost tropical environment is an unexpected gem amidst the sage, pinyon pine, and juniper one expects to find in the desert. After the hike we drove through Rifle Mountain Park and had a picnic in the White River National Forest’s Spruce Picnic Area. On the way home we stopped at Rifle Gap where 38 years ago famed avant-garde artist Christo hung a vivid orange curtain, “The Valley Curtain,” across the canyon.
