Celebrate Colorado Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month!
This May the Museum of Western Colorado and City of Grand Junction are excited to offer several programs and activities that celebrate Colorado archaeology and historic preservation.
On Wednesday, May 20, join us for an open house at the historic 1906 Grand Junction Depot which has not been open to the public for many years. There you can learn about the history of the building and current efforts to restore the structure.
Two events will be held at the Whitman Educational Center on Thursday, May 21. At noon a lecture by CJ Brafford, director of the Ute History Museum, will be given as part of the Museum’s oral history program about Ute culture and history. Later that evening archaeologists from the Dominguez Archaeological Research Group will give a lecture on the geo-archaeology of the Indian Creek Area.
You can even test your geocaching skills with the Museum’s new Historic Downtown Geocaching program. You can download the scavenger hunt here or stop by the Museum of the West for a copy.
And if you still crave additional information about local historic preservation check out the City of Grand Junction’s new website here.
